Quick answer

Bendigo businesses can borrow from banks (including one headquartered in the city), non-bank lenders, fintechs and private lenders. What fits depends on the sector: defence and engineering suppliers often need invoice and equipment finance to handle big contracts, food and wine producers need funding that follows the harvest, and health and retail businesses mostly use term loans and fit-out finance. Applications are handled online.

Key points

  • Health care, retail, construction, education and manufacturing are the region's five biggest employers, together about 57% of jobs in early 2026
  • A $750m Defence commitment announced in April 2026 means 268 new Bushmasters will be built at Thales' Bendigo facility, which flows through to local suppliers
  • Bendigo became Australia's first UNESCO Creative City and Region of Gastronomy in 2019, putting local producers on a bigger stage
  • Being a supplier to a large contractor changes what lenders look at: the contract, the payment terms and your customer's reliability

In April 2026 the federal government announced a $750m investment for Thales Australia to build 268 new Bushmaster protected vehicles at its Bendigo plant, on top of a smaller order the previous year. For a city of Bendigo’s size, a production run like that ripples a long way: machinists, fabricators, electrical contractors, freight firms, caterers and cleaners all pick up work.

That’s one face of Bendigo’s economy. The others are the hospital precinct, a food and wine scene good enough to earn a UNESCO gastronomy designation, a still-working goldfield, and a healthy retail and services sector. In February 2026, federal labour market data showed health care, retail, construction, education and manufacturing as the region’s five largest employing industries, together about 57% of jobs.

Supplying a big contractor: what lenders look for

Winning work from a large prime contractor is a milestone for a small engineering business, and a cash flow test. You usually have to buy materials, sometimes tooling, and pay staff for weeks before your first invoice is paid. Big buyers set their own payment cycles, commonly a month or two, and won’t shorten them for a small supplier.

On the bright side, a signed contract strengthens your application. Lenders weigh:

  • The contract itself. Value, duration, and whether orders are firm or forecast.
  • Payment terms and the customer’s reliability. A creditworthy customer is the backbone of invoice finance, because the lender is effectively relying on that customer to pay.
  • Your capacity. Can your workshop and team actually deliver the volume? A lender may ask for a simple production plan.
  • Existing security. A general security agreement may already be registered on the PPSR by your bank. A second lender will need to work around it, so disclose it early.

The step-by-step above sets out the usual order. Many suppliers start with equipment finance for the machines and add invoice finance once invoices begin to flow. Our page on funding a big contract you’ve just won goes deeper.

Financing food, wine and the gastronomy region

Bendigo was named Australia’s first UNESCO Creative City and Region of Gastronomy in 2019, a title shared with the surrounding shires. For producers, that brings visitors, restaurant demand and export interest, but the underlying business still runs on seasons.

Producer When cash is tightest Finance worth considering
Wineries in the Heathcote and Bendigo districts Before and during vintage, while wine is in barrel Seasonal facilities, stock finance, equipment finance for presses and tanks
Growers and orchards Pre-harvest labour and inputs Lines of credit, rural-property-secured loans
Restaurants and cafés Fit-out and the first lean months Fit-out loans, unsecured working capital
Small-batch food makers Scaling up packaging and stock for a new retailer Invoice finance, short-term loans

If your security is rural land, a lender will normally insist on a full valuation and may lend a lower proportion of its value. See business loans against rural property and our wineries page.

A bank that calls Bendigo home

Bendigo is the head office city of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, and the major banks and several credit unions all lend locally. Banks are often the lowest-cost source of business finance. Where your business can show at least two years of sound financials, clean tax lodgements and suitable security, a bank offer deserves serious attention. Our Bendigo Bank profile sets out what it offers.

Banks are less flexible where a contract is new and unproven, where the timeline is weeks rather than months, or where there’s an ATO debt in the background. That’s not a reason to give up. It’s when non-bank business loans and private lenders come into their own.

Payroll tax as you grow

Victoria’s payroll tax applies above $1m in annual wages. Bendigo counts as regional Victoria, so an employer paying at least 85% of its Victorian taxable wages to regional staff pays a quarter of the standard rate. A supplier taking on extra staff to meet a defence schedule could cross the threshold quickly, so build the tax into your cash flow forecast and make sure your lender sees it there. The cash flow gap calculator can help you find the tightest point.

A Bendigo example

A made-up workshop with made-up figures, to show the structure.

A precision machining shop in Bendigo’s east employs nine people and turns over $2.1m. It’s offered a three-year subcontract to make brackets and hinge assemblies for a larger supplier, worth about $900k a year, paid 45 days after month end.

To deliver, the owner needs a second five-axis machine at $410k and about $160k of working capital to cover steel and two new hires before payments start. Their bank approves the machine on equipment finance within a fortnight, but wants six months of production history on the subcontract before increasing the overdraft. The owner sets up invoice finance against the larger supplier’s invoices to bridge that gap, with the plan of moving the working capital back to the bank once there’s a track record. They check the total dollar cost on the invoice finance calculator first.

Where to next if your bank says no

If the bank’s timeline or criteria don’t fit, the lender directory shows who funds what, and our declined by the bank page sets out your options in order. Businesses spread across central and northern Victoria may also find our Ballarat and Shepparton pages useful.

Talk to us about funding your Bendigo business

Whether you’re tooling up for defence work, getting ready for vintage or opening a second shop in Hargreaves Mall, what decides your options is the security behind the loan, the pattern of your income and what the money is for.

Our enquiry form takes around sixty seconds to fill in, and simply asking for help has no effect on your credit rating. Your enquiry isn’t sold on or spread across dozens of lenders. Instead, one of our people reviews it properly and calls you to discuss realistic choices. It pays to be exact about the figures and dates you give us, because that’s what lets us line up a suitable lender the first time round.

Frequently asked questions

How can a small Bendigo engineering firm fund a defence supply contract?

Usually with a combination: equipment finance for new machines, invoice finance against invoices issued to the prime contractor, and sometimes a short-term loan to buy materials before the first invoice. Lenders will want to see the purchase order or contract and its payment terms.

Is Bendigo regional Victoria for payroll tax?

Yes. Employers who pay at least 85% of Victorian taxable wages to regional employees can use the regional rate, which is a quarter of the standard rate. The threshold is $1m in annual wages.

Can a winery or food producer near Bendigo get a seasonal loan?

Yes. Lenders who understand agriculture and food will look at a full year of figures and structure repayments around harvest or sales seasons. Equipment finance for bottling lines, cool rooms or tractors is also common.

Should I approach Bendigo Bank first because it's local?

It's a sensible place to start if your business fits its criteria, as with any bank. Banks are often the cheapest option. If the answer is no or the timing doesn't work, non-bank and private lenders are the next step.

Can I use my home in Strathfieldsaye or Kangaroo Flat as security?

Generally yes, subject to a valuation and the equity you have. A second mortgage or caveat loan can sit behind your existing home loan, which is often how owners fund short-term business needs quickly.
