Quick answer

Comprehensive credit reporting (CCR) is Australia's credit reporting system that records positive as well as negative information. Alongside defaults and enquiries, your consumer credit file now shows the accounts you hold, their limits and up to two years of monthly repayment history. Business lenders who check a director's or guarantor's personal file see that fuller picture, so recent on-time payments help and recent late ones hurt.

Key points

  • Adds positive data, such as on-time repayments and credit limits, to the old negatives-only file
  • Repayment history runs for two years and is shown as a monthly code from 0 to 7
  • Hardship arrangements can be recorded and stay on the file for one year
  • Business lenders usually see it through the personal files of directors and guarantors

For decades an Australian credit file was mostly a list of things that had gone wrong: defaults, court judgments, bankruptcies and a record of every application made. Comprehensive credit reporting changed the shape of that file. It now also records what has gone right, month by month, which gives a lender a far more rounded view of how a person handles debt.

What does comprehensive credit reporting add to a credit file?

The older “negative” system mainly showed enquiries and adverse events. Under CCR, credit providers that participate also report:

  • Account details: the type of credit, the date it was opened and closed, and the credit limit.
  • Repayment history information: a monthly status for each account over the last two years. A code of 0 means the payment was made on time; numbers from 1 to 7 show how far behind the oldest missed amount was. A payment more than 14 days after its due date counts as missed.
  • Financial hardship information: since mid-2022, an agreed hardship arrangement can be flagged against the monthly history, and that flag stays for one year.

The large banks were required to supply this data from 2018, and most mainstream lenders now take part. The three main credit reporting bodies, Equifax, Experian and illion, hold the information and turn it into reports and scores.

Why it matters when you borrow for a business

Strictly, the repayment history rules cover consumer credit. Business loans fall under a separate set of privacy rules. But the person behind the business is rarely invisible. A lender assessing a company loan will usually ask the directors for consent to check their personal files, and every personal guarantee brings the guarantor’s file into play too.

That makes three things more important than they used to be:

  1. Recent behaviour carries real weight. A business owner who missed three home loan payments last spring will show a run of codes that a lender can’t miss, even with no default listed.
  2. Old problems can be balanced out. Two years of zeros after a paid default tells a clearer recovery story than the old system ever could.
  3. Limits count, not just balances. An unused $40k credit card limit still appears, and some lenders factor that limit into serviceability.

A worked example

Mia runs an electrical contracting company in Geelong and wants a $120k unsecured business loan for a new van and tools. The lender pulls her personal file as director and guarantor.

Account Last 6 months of repayment history
Home loan 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0
Credit card ($25k limit) 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0
Car loan (closed in March) 0, 0, 0

The single “1” on the card points to one payment that slipped more than 14 days late five months ago, followed by a clean run. Most credit teams will read that as a one-off, especially if Mia explains it up front. Had the card shown 1, 2, 3 in a row, the conversation would be very different, and she might be steered toward a smaller amount or a secured option.

What should you check before applying?

Request your free credit report from each bureau, because not every lender reports to all three. Look for repayment codes you don’t recognise, limits on cards you thought were closed, and hardship flags that should have dropped off. Errors can be corrected through the credit provider or bureau. If you have too many recent credit enquiries, slow down before adding more.

Not sure how your file will look to a lender?

That uncertainty is exactly why our enquiry comes before any credit check. The form takes roughly a minute and leaves your credit history exactly as it was. Nobody blasts your application out to a long list of financiers; instead, someone on our team reads your situation, repayment code quirks included, and rings you personally. Honest numbers plus a brief note about anything odd on your report help us steer you toward a lender whose policy suits you, instead of one that says no and leaves another enquiry behind.

Frequently asked questions

Does comprehensive credit reporting apply to business loans?

The detailed repayment history rules apply to consumer credit such as home loans, credit cards and personal loans. Business credit information is handled separately. In practice, though, most business lenders check the personal files of directors and guarantors, so CCR data still shapes many business loan decisions.

How long does a late payment stay on my credit file under CCR?

Repayment history information stays for two years. A payment counts as missed once it is more than 14 days past the due date, and each month is shown as a code from 0, meaning on time, up to 7 for the oldest overdue amounts.

Can comprehensive credit reporting help me?

Yes. Under the old system, a clean record looked the same as a thin one. Now a long run of on-time repayments is visible, which can help an owner with an old paid default show that things have been in order since.

Is a hardship arrangement a black mark?

It is recorded, but it is not a default. Financial hardship information sits alongside repayment history for one year and shows that you made an arrangement with the lender rather than simply falling behind.

Will enquiring with you show up on my credit file?

No. Sending us an enquiry does not involve a credit check, so nothing new is added to your file just for asking about your options.
