Quick answer

With an ABN under six months, most unsecured lenders will say not yet, but borrowing is still possible. Property-secured loans, equipment finance against the asset, bank startup loans and, from about month four, a small number of online lenders can work. If the ABN is new only because you restructured or bought an existing business, the real trading history can often be shown and counted.

Key points

  • A new ABN can sit on top of an old business: restructures and business purchases carry history with them
  • Before month four, security does almost all the work: property equity or the equipment being financed
  • As at October 2026, Bizcap published a four-month minimum and Prospa a six-month minimum for their main loans
  • Bank startup loans of $10k to $50k accept very young ABNs if you bring a plan and a forecast
  • Use the waiting months to build clean statements in one business account: that's what unlocks the next tier

Four months is not long. You may only have two or three full months of bank statements, your first BAS might not be lodged yet, and every lending website seems to begin its criteria list with a trading period you haven’t reached.

So start with a different question. Is your business actually new, or is only the ABN new? The answer changes which lenders are worth talking to.

Is it a new business, or just a new ABN?

Lenders look up your ABN on ABN Lookup, which shows the date it became active, the entity type and any GST registration. That date is the first thing an automated system reads. It isn’t always the truth about the business.

There are three common versions of “under six months”:

Your situation What the ABN date says What you can show instead
A genuinely new venture Under six months Your plan, your forecast, your experience in the industry and any signed work
A restructure, such as a sole trader moving into a company or trust Under six months The old ABN, old bank statements and tax returns proving the same business, owner and customers
A business you bought Under six months The vendor’s financial statements, the sale contract and your statements since settlement

If you’re in the second or third row, lead with that. A two-line note such as “same business, same customers, now trading through a company since July” with the old records attached can move you from the startup pile into the established one. Some online lenders read only the account they’re connected to, so this works best with lenders who have a person look at the file.

Buying a business is its own category, with lenders who specialise in it. Our business acquisition loans page covers how those deals are assessed.

Which routes are open before month six?

For a genuinely new venture, the lenders who can help are the ones whose security or process doesn’t depend on a long run of deposits.

Before about month four

  • Property-secured lending. Where there’s equity in a house or a commercial building you hold, a loan against your home or a second mortgage is assessed mostly on the property and how you’ll repay. Our own lender HomeSec Business Finance is one that weighs the equity and exit plan ahead of trading history. This is the main way larger amounts get funded at this stage.
  • Equipment finance. Because the machine or vehicle is the lender’s fallback, new ABNs get approved, usually wanting a clean personal credit file, sometimes a deposit, and a sensible match between the asset and your trade. Our guide on equipment finance for new businesses goes into the detail.
  • A bank startup loan. As at October 2026, St.George and Westpac each advertised a startup loan of $10k to $50k for businesses whose ABN was registered less than two years, with no asset security needed but a business plan and cash flow forecast required. A bank is often the cheapest money around, so if the amount fits, this is worth a proper go.

From about month four to six

  • The first online lenders. As at October 2026, Bizcap published a four-month minimum with $12k in monthly revenue for its fast and small business loans. Prospa published six months and $6k a month in turnover. Expect modest amounts sized on your deposits, short terms and frequent repayments.

What does an early loan cost?

Usually more than a bank, and the gap is biggest for unsecured money in the first months. A young business carries more risk in a lender’s eyes, and the pricing reflects that. Property-secured and equipment loans tend to cost less than unsecured ones because the security carries much of that risk.

The figure to compare is the total in dollars you’ll repay over the whole term, including establishment and other fees, not the weekly repayment. The business loan repayment calculator helps you see that total and check the repayment against your quietest month.

A worked example: month three, a lease and a coffee machine

Consider an illustrative owner who opened a small café three months ago after ten years managing other people’s venues. Takings are building, but the original espresso machine has failed and a replacement costs $28k. The bank startup loan would need a full plan and a few weeks. The online lenders’ trading minimums aren’t met yet.

Two routes are realistic. Equipment finance on the machine, with the owner’s management history and clean credit doing the persuading, spreads the cost over a few years with the machine as security. The other path is borrowing against the owner’s house, which might suit if they also need working capital. They choose equipment finance for the machine alone, because it keeps the home out of it and spreads the repayments over roughly the years the machine will be pulling shots.

Making the most of the months before you qualify

Treat the gap before month six as preparation time. What you do now decides which lenders say yes later.

  1. Bank everything through one business account. Every customer payment, every supplier payment. Lenders can only count deposits they can see.
  2. Avoid dishonours and overdrawn days. In a short history, one bounced payment stands out.
  3. Register for GST if you’ll need to. You must register once turnover reaches $75k, and some lenders want GST registration regardless.
  4. Lodge your first BAS on time. It’s the first official record of turnover a lender can check.
  5. Keep your personal credit clean. Don’t apply for three cards to tide you over; each application can add an enquiry.
  6. Draft a simple forecast now. You’ll need it for a bank startup loan, and it sharpens your own planning.

Common mistakes with a very young ABN

  • Restructuring right before you need finance. Moving from sole trader to company resets the ABN date. If borrowing is on the horizon, talk to your accountant about timing.
  • Leaning on personal credit for business costs. It works in a pinch, but it can hurt both your personal borrowing power and the business’s future applications.
  • Hiding a restructure or a purchase. It’s your strongest argument. Put it up front with the old records.
  • Borrowing unsecured for an asset. Short, expensive money for a machine that lasts years strains a young business. Use asset finance for assets.

Young ABN, real plans: let’s see where you fit

Every established business had a month three. What makes the difference now is putting the right security, product and evidence in front of the right lender, so the first application is the one that works.

The enquiry is about sixty seconds of your time. Nothing about it shows up on your credit report. Your enquiry isn’t blasted out to every lender in the country; someone on our team looks at your ABN age, your plans and any history behind the ABN, then calls you to talk it through. If you restructured or bought the business, mention it on the form, and give honest numbers, so we can steer you straight to the option that fits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business loan with a brand-new ABN?

Yes, through routes that don't depend on trading history: a loan secured by property equity, equipment finance where the asset is the security, or a bank startup loan for a smaller amount with a business plan. Unsecured loans based on bank statements generally need at least a few months of deposits.

I changed from sole trader to a company. Does my history start again?

On paper the company has a new ABN, but lenders can look through it. Give them the old ABN, statements from the old account and the sole trader tax returns showing the same business, customers and owner. Many will count the combined history, though some online lenders' systems only read the new account.

I bought an existing business. Am I a new business to a lender?

Partly. Your ABN is new, but the business has a record. Lenders will usually want the vendor's financials, the contract of sale and your own statements since settlement. Acquisition lenders are used to this and assess the business's history alongside your experience.

What's the earliest an online lender will look at me?

As at October 2026, Bizcap published a minimum of four months' trading with $12k monthly revenue for its fast and small business loans, and Prospa published six months with $6k monthly turnover. Most others ask for longer. Check the lender's current criteria before applying.

Should I use a personal loan or credit card instead?

It's common, and sometimes it's the only fast option, but it puts business debt in your personal name and can limit what you borrow later, including on a home loan. If you go that way, keep the amount small and move to proper business finance once the business qualifies.
